Tom Malishaucki, the pharmacist at the Free Clinic of Franklin County, has been named "Volunteer of the Year" by the clinic.

"Tom is a jewel," said Executive Director Lois Macdonald. "You just don't find that many people any more willing to go not one, but 10 extra miles."

Malishaucki helped coordinate the clinic's golf tournament. He approached businesses to request support and donations for the clinic. He emceed the Fiddle Fest and outsold every volunteer in raffle tickets. He parked cars at the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour. He solicited donations from his friends and colleagues throughout the U.S. All total, he brought in around $10,000 in donations.ᅠ

But Malishaucki can do more than raise the coffers, said Candice Simmons with the Free Clinic. He owned his own pharmacy for 28 years, and now that he is retired, he splits his pharmaceutical expertise between the Free Clinic of Franklin County and the Ferrum Community Health Center.

Malishaucki said he feels he has been called to help those less fortunate get the medication they need but could not afford without the clinic.

"I volunteer because that's what the Lord Jesus Christ wants me to do," he said.

The Free Clinic's board of directors unanimously voted to award the 2009 Volunteer of the Year Award to Malishaucki.

Malishaucki retired to Franklin County from Pennsylvania with his wife, Gail, 12 years ago. He is a member of Mended Hearts, Chapter 148, and Glade Hill Baptist Church. He is well-known in the community as a guitar player and singer.

"Volunteers are the heart and the soul of non-profits operating on shoestring budgets," Simmons said. "The Free Clinic of Franklin County is fortunate to have a large pool of volunteers that perform a variety of functions from treating patients to fundraising to inputting computer data and stuffing envelopes. Last year, 271 clinic volunteers clocked 3,842 hours."
