Brandon Webb, a sixth-grader at Benjamin Franklin Middle School, will flip the switch to light the community Christmas tree on the courthouse lawn at 5 p.m. today.

Webb submitted the overall winning entry in the annual Christmas card contest, sponsored by the Franklin County Department of Parks and Recreation.

His card design will be used on the cover of the recreation department's Christmas card next year, according to Marcia Cramblett, programs director.

The tree-lighting event will include holiday music, hot chocolate and cookies, according to CPR Director Katie McElroy.

Friday will also be the first day of judging for the annual Festival of Trees. This year, all the trees will be located on the main floor of the N. Morris Building, across the street from the courthouse.

In years past, the trees have been located inside businesses along Franklin Street.

McElroy said it is not too late to enter the contest.
