Stepping Stone Mission will be serving a much larger meal on Thanksgiving Day than the usual one volunteers prepared Tuesday. Members of Rocky Mount United Methodist Church were at the mission Tuesday for their monthly volunteer work. Stepping Stone Mission will serve turkey, dressing and all the fixings Thursday for the homeless and others in Rocky Mount and Franklin County without a place to eat.
Joanne Patterson, founder of Stepping Stone, said the meal will include the traditional Thanksgiving menu.
The meal will be served in the American Legion Post 111 building at 565 Diamond Avenue in RockyᅠMount, the location of Stepping Stone's regular daily meal for homeless and low-income people.
Patterson said the Thanksgiving meal will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., one hour longer than Stepping Stone's regular daily meal.
A year ago, about 55 people came for the Thanksgiving meal, Patterson said. But she expects more people to come for this year's meal because of the recession.
Stepping Stone serves hot meals six days a week and a light lunch on Sunday.
The soup kitchen is open to everyone who walks through the doors, Patterson said.
Almost all of the people who come to the soup kitchen live in Franklin County.
Stepping Stone Mission has worked with churches and businesses in Franklin County to help fund and staff the soup kitchen with volunteers, Patterson said.
Stepping Stone, which was organized by Patterson and others, is incorporated as a non-profit organization.
The soup kitchen began serving the meals more than three years ago.
Initially, Stepping Stone expected to serve meals to a small number of people daily, perhaps no more than a dozen, until word of the soup kitchen spread. Now, Stepping Stone serves about 50-55 people daily. |
