Residents of Rocky Mount and Franklin County can now enjoy bluegrass music videos in their homes, free of charge.
Rocky Mount's cable television Channel 6 has been upgraded so it can broadcast video of Crooked Road bluegrass music shows, along with the town's bulletin board of community events and messages.
The town's Channel 6 is part of the Jet Broadband cable system in Rocky Mount and Franklin County.
Richard Shively volunteered to help upgrade the town's cable channel on his own time and expense. He also secured the equipment.
Shively is president and general manager of Shively Electrical Co. He is also a partner in Cable 12.
Town Manager James Ervin said the town is now broadcasting video of the Crooked Road music on a regular schedule using equipment, DVDs and training provided by Shively.
Recent videos aired on Channel 6 included bluegrass groups, fall scenery at Ferrum College and crowd scenes from the 36th annual Ferrum Folklife Festival.
Shively said his company has underwritten the costs for the changes to the cable channel. He said he is committed to helping the town in any way he can.
He recalled that he first talked with former town manager Keith Holland about upgrading Channel 6.
"I wanted to get involved with Rocky Mount. This is my home," he said.
Shively said Channel 6 is not in competition with Cable 12.
"I am Cable 12. We are a separate operation," he said, adding that he handles the business aspects of Cable 12's operation.
