Ferrum College will open its new campus safety and welcome center with an informal open house from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. today.
The renovated facility is located on Route 40, near the east entrance into the college. The building is the former home of the Christian Ministries Center.
Members of the college's board of trustees, Franklin County officials, along with other guests and visitors, will be welcomed by Dr. Jennifer Braaten, Ferrum College president.
Ferrum Police Chief Libby Legg said the campus safety center will provide an office for the Franklin County Sheriff's Department, Virginia State Police and other law enforcement agencies in the county.
Sheriff Ewell Hunt said there will not be a deputy stationed at the center; however, the new center will provide an office for deputies working the Ferrum area.
The new Ferrum College welcome center will occupy part of the 3,500-square-foot building and will provide visitors with a place to pick up maps and college literature, and get directions for the campus.
This summer, the college implemented a new model of safety that combines both emergency services and safety functions with its police department.
The hiring of Legg as director of campus safety and police chief allowed the college to integrate the emergency services and safety functions with the campus police department.
Legg has more than 20 years experience with the Roanoke City Police Department, where she was the first female officer to rise to the rank of lieutenant.
"This model has been strongly recommended as a best practice in coordinating and enhancing safety services on campus with all related information flowing through the area," said Bobby Thompson, the college's senior vice president of business affairs.
An announcement will be made later in the semester about a new location for the Christian Ministries Center.
The Christian Ministries program continues to flourish under the direction of Wes Austin, dean of the chapel. The new ministry center will accommodate an even greater numbers of students and allow for expanded outdoor programming.
In the interim, the center is located in a temporary space near Vaughan Chapel.
