A Ferrum man pleaded no contest Tuesday in Franklin County Circuit Court to four charges of proposing sexual intercourse to a 16-year-old girl.
The no contest plea by Michael Kenneth Bolton, 42, is a form of guilty plea, which means that the evidence against Bolton would have been sufficient for a finding of guilty had the case gone to trial.
Bolton had been charged with six counts of proposing that the girl have sexual intercourse with him. However, through the plea agreement with the commonwealth's attorney's office, two of the six charges were dropped with no sentencing agreement.
The maximum sentence Bolton could receive on each charge is 10 years in prison.
In summarizing the evidence against Bolton, Commonwealth's Attorney Cliff Hapgood said the case came to light when the father of the girl contacted authorities and said his daughter was having sexual intercourse with Bolton.
Hapgood said the girl told investigators she had sexual intercourse with Bolton about 10 times. Bolton admitted to authorities that he had sexual intercourse with the girl five or six times.
Hapgood said the sexual encounters occurred in the Ferrum area on property with a house on it owned by Bolton.
Hapgood said Bolton drove the girl to the property in a truck, parked behind the house and had sex with the girl inside the truck.
The acts occurred between January and March, Hapgood said.
Bolton is scheduled to be sentence on Nov. 19 at 3:15 p.m. in circuit court. In the meantime, a presentence report on Bolton will be prepared. |
