Six additional locations in Franklin County and Rocky Mount have been approved as official Crooked Road sites, giving the county 11 musical venues, the most of any on the 253-mile trail.

The new locations were designated as "affiliated partners" during a recent meeting of executive board of The Crooked Road: Virginia Heritage Music Trail.

Four of the new partners are in the county and two are located in Rocky Mount.

Two of the six are black gospel music events, which are the only ones on the Crooked Road.

The official banners will be presented to the groups and organizations at a Crooked Road board meeting on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. at the Blue Ridge Institute on the Ferrum College campus.

Jonathan Romeo, interim director of TCR, made the announcement Thursday, Aug. 20.

Being approved as an affiliated partner gives the event the right to use the Crooked Road logo and to fly its banner, he said.

Jam sessions approved in Franklin County include the Waidsboro Ruritan Club Bluegrass Jam, Crossroads Ruritan Jam, 77 Restaurant in Ferrum with its Monday Night Jam Session, and the Saturday sessions at old Shively's Store at Crossroads.

Rocky Mount events selected include the annual Warren Street Festival and the Crooked Road Gospel Sing at the Pigg River Community Center.

Town and county events previously approved as affiliated partners include the annual Blue Ridge Folklife Festival on the Ferrum College campus, which includes the Blue Ridge Institute; Dairy Queen with its weekly performances by the Dairy Queen Band; Tripple Creek Park Festival; Franklin County Fun Festival; and the Franklin County Senior Citizen Center's jam sessions.

An event or jam session must have at least a two-year history before it can be considered by the board for an affiliated partnership title, according to Romeo.

"With all of these sites, it gives us venues for our residents or visitors almost every night of the week," said Roddy Moore, a Crooked Road board member and executive director of the Blue Ridge Institute.

"What the county needs now is a nice brochure that can be placed at state visitors' centers, motels and restaurants that provides residents and visitors with the locations, days and times of each musical event," Moore added.
