No summer school on Fridays

Wednesday, July 1, 2009

By JOEL TURNER - Staff Writer

Because of the budget crunch for Franklin County schools, there will be a four-day a week summer school for elementary students this summer.

In another cost-saving move, county schools are closed on Fridays this summer.

Summer school will be held for two weeks in July. The dates are July 6-9 and July 13-16.

The budget squeeze will also cause some elementary schools to combine summer sessions. Sontag and Snow Creek schools will have a joint summer school. The classes will be at Sontag.

Ferrum and Henry elementary will have summer school together. The classes will be at Ferrum.

By switching to a four-day summer school, the school system can save money on bus transportation, fuel and utilities, school officials said.

Seventeen instructional positions were eliminated across the school division because of the financial crunch.

An additional dozen instructional and administrative jobs were either reduced from 12-month and 11-month jobs to 10-months, resulting in salary cuts, or employees were reassigned as part of instructional restructuring in some areas.

Among the other cost-saving reductions in the school budget were the following:

"Elimination of the instructional swimming program for middle school students at the Franklin County YMCA.

"Reduction in the central office staff as a result of retirements.

"Transfer of some school employees to other positions where vacancies have occurred because of retirements and resignations.

"A $90,000 reduction in funds for new textbooks.

"Reduction in funds for students to attend state and national competitions, such as Odyssey of the Mind.

"Reductions in funds for training and staff development for teachers and other school personnel.

"Reduction in funds for travel for teachers and school personnel to attend educational and professional conferences.

"Reduction in funds for materials and supplies.
