A Penhook man has been charged with driving under the influence and reckless driving in connection with the car crash that killed a Rocky Mount man in Pittsylvania County Friday night.
Additional charges may be filed against Benjamin Andrew David, 23, following a review of the case by Pittsylvania County Commonwealth's Attorney David Grimes, according to Trooper B.R. Rife Jr. with the Virginia State Police (VSP).
Henry Norborne Smith, 76, died Saturday in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in the crash.
Smith was traveling east in a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer on Route 40 when a 1992 GMC pickup struck the SUV in the rear, according to Sgt. Bob Carpentieri with the VSP. The Trailblazer was pushed out of the road and over an embankment.
Smith was not wearing a seat belt, Rife said.
The accident occurred around 11 p.m. Friday on Route 40, near the intersection of Route 751 (Grassland Drive). |
