Junior Victoria Bruce tallied four goals Monday night to lead Franklin County to a 5-0 shutout triumph over William Fleming in the quarterfinals of the Western Valley District girls' soccer tournament at C.I. (Cy) Dillon Stadium-Fred M. Brown Memorial Field.

The Eagles (10-6), seeded third, advances to Thursday's semifinals against No. 2 Patrick Henry. The match is set for 5:30 p.m. at Patriots Stadium-Merrill Gainer Field.

PH has defeated FCHS twice this season by scores of 3-0 and 2-0.

The Eagles defeated the Patriots as a No. 3 seed in last year's semifinals en route to appearances in the WVD tournament title match and the Northwest Region quarterfinals.

William Fleming, seeded sixth, saw its debut season of girls' soccer in the WVD end with the loss. The Colonels did not field a team in the sport last year in their inaugural year of interscholastic play in the league.

Monday, Bruce notched a hat trick -- three goals scored -- for the fifth time this season

Bruce, a third-year varsity player, has netted 25 goals this season and has scored multiple goals in eight matches.

The Eagles defeated the Colonels for the third time this season.

Freshman Connor Wood also scored for the Eagles.

Wood was credited with an assist on one of Bruce's goals.

The Eagles outshot the Colonels, 35-1, and held a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.

FCHS netminder Crissy Moran stopped one shot in the first half. Reserve goalkeeper Kelsey Hodges took the field after intermission and faced no shots.

FCHS senior Taylor Weidman sustained an injury to a ligament in her hip.

Weidman and sophomore Margaret Parcell, who missed her second straight match because of an injury, are doubtful for Thursday's semifinal.

In other quarterfinal-round matches Monday, No. 4 seed GW Danville edged No. 5 seed Halifax County on penalty kicks, 5-4, at J.T. Christopher Stadium.

The match was tied at 1 after 80 minutes of regulation play and 20 minutes of overtime -- two. mandatory, five-minute extra stanzas and two, five-minute, sudden-death periods.

Danville won the match on the sixth round of penalty kicks. GW made its first three tries, missed on its fourth, then converted its last two.

Halifax made each of its first four tries, but with a chance to win the match, Halifax missed its fifth attempt with the count tied at 4.

Danville was ahead 5-4 when Halifax failed to equal the score on its sixth attempt.

Danville plays five-time reigning WVD champion E.C. Glass in Thursday's semifinals.
