Gill scores 39 to pace Eagles

ROANOKE -- Isiah Gill netted a game-best 39 points Friday to lead Franklin County to a 68-57 Western Valley District boys' freshman basketball triumph over Patrick Henry.

FCHS (6-1 in the WVD, 10-1 overall) reached double-figures in victories this season with the win, its third in a row and its second over PH.

Gill has scored 79 points -- he tallied 40 in an Eagles' district victory over Halifax County Wednesday night -- in his last two games and has scored surpassed the 20 point mark in six games this season.

Gill made 14 field goals, all from inside the 3-point arc, and was 11 of 17 (64.7 percent) from the free-throw line.

For the game, FCHS converted 25 field goals and was 18 of 24 (75 percent) from the line.

Gill scored 28 points in the second half -- 16 in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth.

The Eagles overcame a four-point, 29-25, halftime deficit by outscoring the Patriots 43-28 after intermission.

FCHS won the third quarter by 11 points, 23-12, to move in front by seven, 48-41. The Eagles took the fourth period 20-16.

The score was tied at 14 after the first quarter. PH won the second stanza 15-11.

PH's loss overshadowed a 26-point effort by Dewan Day.

Also scoring for the Patriots were Devontae Walker with nine points, Andrew Stockstill with seven, Shaheed Fitzgerald with six, Tayontae Calloway with four, David Prince and Ryan Revia each with two and Tre Mauck with one.

PH mad 24 field goals and was 9 of 18 (50 percent) from the free-throw line.

Devonta Royal tallied 11 points for the Eagles.

Also scored were Jalen Robertson with eight points, Zavier Hunt with six and Darrell Hairston with four.

FCHS returns to action Tuesday at William Fleming. Tip off is 4:30 p.m.Thursday, the Eagles travel to Lynchburg for a district game against E.C. Glass at 4:30 p.m.
