The General Assembly voted Wednesday to approve a $1.46 billion bond package for Virginia colleges and universities, and state building projects.
The bond package includes projects for two community colleges serving Franklin County.
It contains $22.7 million for a new science and technology building at Virginia Western Community College.
Patrick Henry Community College will receive $8.7 million for a new motorsports workforce development center.
The bond package was approved by the General Assembly at its one-day veto session on Wednesday.
The bond package represents a compromise between the Senate and the House of Delegates.
The bond package does not require voter approval in a referendum.
The package includes building projects for many public universities and colleges in Virginia, as well as a medical school in Roanoke.
Gov. Tim Kaine said the bond compromise is a "record investment in Virginia's higher education institutions."
State Sen. Robert Hurt (R-Chatham) and Del. Charles Poindexter (R-Franklin County) supported the bond package.
Also at the veto session Wednesday, the General Assembly approved some of Kaine's amendments to bills, and rejected others.
State legislators will return to Richmond later for a special session to address the transportation funding issue. The Virginia Supreme Court has struck down regional transportation agencies in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads. |
